How to add a watermark to a PDF

A text watermark says something about a document before anyone reads it: DRAFT on a proposal that isn't final, CONFIDENTIAL on contracts and financials, PAID on settled invoices, SAMPLE on proofs you send a client before approval, or your company name across a portfolio so it stays credited as it travels. One stamp on every page communicates status and ownership without a single word of explanation.

1

Drop your PDF

Drag the document into the box above, or click to browse for it.

2

Type your watermark text

Something like CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT or PAID — then set the size, opacity and angle to taste. Light and diagonal is the classic professional look; strong and horizontal reads like a stamp.

3

Click “Run Watermark PDF”

The text is stamped onto every page instantly, right in your browser. The document never leaves your device.

4

Download the watermarked PDF

The watermark is now part of the page content — it shows in every PDF reader and on every printout. No watermark-of-the-watermark, nothing else added.

Why PDFication

Why use PDFication to watermark PDF files?

Private documents stay private

Watermarking usually happens to the most sensitive files — contracts, financials, unpublished work. This tool stamps them entirely in your browser; nothing is uploaded anywhere.

No watermark on your watermark

Plenty of free tools stamp their own brand onto your output alongside yours. This one doesn't — the only text on your pages is the text you typed.

Full control, instantly

Choose the exact wording, size, transparency and angle, and see the result immediately. A faint diagonal or a bold horizontal stamp — both are seconds away.

Every page, consistently

The watermark is applied to all pages at once, in the same position and style — something word processors make you place by hand, page by page.

Choosing the right tool

Watermark settings, explained

The difference between a professional-looking watermark and an ugly one is three small choices:

Angle — diagonal or horizontal

Diagonal (45°) is the classic: unmissable but easy to read around. Horizontal works like a formal stamp at the page's heart — DRAFT across a cover page, for example.

Opacity — subtle or loud

Very light (0.15–0.3) keeps the text fully readable underneath — right for CONFIDENTIAL on a contract. Strong (0.5+) makes the document clearly unfinished — right for proofs and drafts.

Text — short and bold wins

One or two words in capitals read best: DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, SAMPLE, PAID. Long sentences turn to clutter, especially on smaller pages.

What about logos and images?

This tool stamps text only — image watermarks aren't supported yet. For ownership marking, your name or company name in a clean font does the same job.

The safe default for professional documents: CONFIDENTIAL, Very light opacity, Diagonal. Stamp first, then [compress](compress-pdf) if you're emailing it — or [merge](merge-pdf) several marked files into one.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

▸Can I add a logo or image watermark?

Not yet — this tool applies text watermarks only. For ownership marking, a clean text stamp (your name, brand or NOT FOR DISTRIBUTION) covers most needs. Image watermarking is on the roadmap.

▸Will the watermark appear on every page?

Yes — the same text, in the same position, style and transparency, is stamped on all pages of the document in one run.

▸Will the watermark show when the PDF is printed?

Yes. The watermark becomes part of the page content itself, so it prints exactly as it looks on screen — that's what makes it effective for DRAFT and CONFIDENTIAL documents.

▸Can I remove a watermark from a PDF?

This toolbox doesn't remove watermarks — and think twice before removing one you didn't add: watermarks usually mark ownership, drafts or confidentiality, and stripping them can violate the document's terms or someone's copyright. If you added a watermark yourself and still have the original file, simply re-export from the original.

▸What text and symbols can I use?

Letters, numbers and standard punctuation — in any combination and capitalization you like. Emoji and some special symbols aren't supported by the built-in fonts and will be rejected; if you need a symbol-free alternative, spelled-out words like CONFIDENTIAL work everywhere.

▸Does watermarking change the rest of my document?

No. Only the stamp is added — your text, images, links and form fields are untouched, and the original file on your disk is never modified. You receive a new, watermarked copy.
