How to extract text from a scanned PDF (OCR)
The scan-without-text problem is everywhere: contracts and letters that only exist on paper, handed over as PDFs that refuse to be searched, invoices and receipts you need figures from without retyping, old archives digitized before OCR existed, forms filled by hand and scanned back, book chapters photographed and shared as images-in-PDF. Anywhere a document must be *read by a machine* — searched, quoted, converted — OCR is the bridge from paper to data.
Drop your scanned PDF
Drag in the document that behaves like pictures instead of text — the scan where selecting and searching do nothing. Or any PDF whose text you want read out.
Pick the language
Choose the document's language — English today, more languages as needed. OCR reads letter shapes, so the right language makes recognition dramatically more accurate.
Click “Run OCR PDF”
Each page is rendered and read on our server, character by character, with a progress bar following along. Pages take a few seconds each — real reading takes real time.
Download the text
You receive a .txt file with the recognized text, page by page and labeled. From there: copy it into Word, feed it to other tools, or search it like any text.
Why PDFication
Why use PDFication to extract text from scanned PDFs?
Real text from pure pictures
Scanned PDFs contain photos of pages — nothing for a computer to search or copy. OCR reads the letters visually and produces genuine, editable text, character by character.
Processed securely, then deleted
OCR needs serious computing power, so it runs on our server. Your document crosses an encrypted connection, is read automatically, and is deleted immediately after — never stored, never seen.
Honest about what it reads
Clean prints convert beautifully; fuzzy faxes convert imperfectly — and the output tells you what you got, page by page, instead of pretending. You judge the result before trusting it.
No retyping, ever again
The entire reason OCR exists: an hour of transcription collapses into a minute of automatic reading. Free, unlimited, no account between you and your text.
Choosing the right tool
OCR, Extract Text, or just copy-paste?
Three ways to get text out of a PDF — picking the right one starts with knowing what kind of PDF you have:
Scanned PDF → OCR
If selecting text does nothing, search finds nothing, and pages look like photographs — it's a scan, and OCR is the only way in. Open OCR PDF
Digital PDF → Extract Text
If you can select and copy text normally, the text layer already exists — no OCR needed. Extract Text pulls the whole document's text out in seconds, perfectly accurate.
Just a paragraph? → copy-paste
For a few lines from a digital PDF, selecting and copying is still the fastest tool ever invented. OCR earns its keep at document scale.
Need the layout, not the words?
Tables and structured data from a *digital* PDF belong in PDF to Excel; a scan's table goes OCR-first, then to Excel with the OCR'd copy.
The quick test that saves everyone time: try to select a sentence. Selects fine → Extract Text. Nothing selects → OCR. And mixed documents (some scanned pages, some digital)? Run both tools and combine — each page ends up where it converts best.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
▸Why can't I select or search text in my PDF?
Because the pages are photographs. Scanners and phone cameras capture images of paper, and unless OCR ran somewhere along the way, the PDF contains no actual text — just pictures of it. That's why selecting does nothing and search finds nothing. OCR solves it by reading the images and generating real text.
▸How accurate is OCR?
It depends mostly on scan quality, and honestly: clean, straight, high-contrast prints reach excellent accuracy; slightly crooked phone photos of documents come out very good; faint faxes, heavy skews and ornate fonts degrade it. The output is page-labeled precisely so you can spot-check against the original before relying on it — which is the professional habit regardless of the tool.
▸Which languages does OCR support?
English today, selectable in the tool — additional languages are on the roadmap. OCR engines read letter shapes per language, so accuracy is highest when the chosen language matches the document. Mixed-language documents should use the dominant language and expect the other to be slightly rougher.
▸How long does OCR take?
A few seconds per page — it's genuine image analysis, not a format shuffle. A 10-page scan is a minute; a 100-page archive is a coffee break. The progress bar shows exactly where the reading stands, page by page, so you're never guessing whether it's stuck.
▸Why a .txt file instead of a searchable PDF?
Deliberate scope: this tool reads and returns the text — clean, labeled, ready for wherever it's needed. A searchable-PDF layer (text invisibly glued under the original scan pages) is a different output with its own uses, and may come later. For most jobs — quoting, converting, archiving the content — plain text is the more flexible result.
▸Is my scanned document uploaded to a server?
Yes — OCR demands serious computing power, so it runs server-side. Your file crosses an encrypted connection, is read automatically, and is deleted immediately after processing. Never stored, never viewed, never used for anything but your job.
▸Does OCR work on handwriting?
Honestly: not reliably. This OCR reads printed and typed text well, but handwriting varies too wildly between people for dependable results — neat printing sometimes works, cursive usually doesn't. For handwritten documents, transcription remains a human job.
